Serving families of children with disabilities and special health needs for 40 years; services include individual assistance, connection to programs at the local, state and national level, and helps parents and schools navigate the special education process. Staff also deliver workshops in-person for groups upon request. Willing to work with parents and professionals to develop and deliver training based on the needs of the group. Workshops/presentations are delivered at no cost to parents. A nominal fee structure is in place for delivery to professional groups.

Helps people with disabilities develop the skills needed to find and maintain employment. Services are individualized for the client. Common services include: - Occupational development - Guidance - Consultation - Mock interviews - Resume and cover letter creation - Assistance with applications - Follow-up contact - Information pertaining to workplace earnings and the impact on Social Security benefits, Medicare, and Medicaid. - Vocational evaluations - Occupational interest surveys - Independent living evaluations - Short-term internships - On site job coaching and/or assessment - Basic social skill development - Cultural awareness - Transitional support into the workplace for students and young adults - Specific job and task analysis - Guidance for accommodations and adaptive equipment Individuals are referred to Career Advantage by the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS), commonly referred to as Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), State Services for the Blind & Visually Impaired (SBVI), local School Districts, as well as friends and family members. Career Advantage is also used as a local resource for businesses who may have disability employment questions, may be seeking guidance on best practices, approaches, accommodations, adaptive equipment, or may be looking to hire additional employees. Functional assessments are available for on-site testing, and disability training for staff is a service available by special request.

Services include program education and support and personal attendant services. - MONEY FOLLOWS THE PERSON - Providing options for older adults and/or people with disabilities living in nursing homes, hospitals, or long-term care facilities to enable them to successfully return to their homes and communities. We are a private non-profit agency with offices in Rapid City, Spearfish & Pierre, serving the people of 17 counties in western and central South Dakota. Independent Living is the right of an individual to make decisions to increase control over one's own life and to be responsible for those choices. Dakota Guardianship and Advocacy Service Lines includes the following: Guardianship and Conservatorship: court appointed guardianship services to incapacitated seniors, disabled adults, Veterans, and minors. - Healthcare Advocacy: assists individuals through the complicated network of various healthcare systems. Powers of Attorney: can serve as a durable medical power of attorney to legally make responsible decisions on behalf of an individual concerning medical decisions and treatment. Additionally, also serves as a financial power of attorney to manage assets and investments. End of Life Planning: mediates potential difficult decisions within families including funeral planning, assisting with settling probates, partnering with attorneys to coordinate will planning and serving as a personal representative to settle estates. Elder Abuse & Neglect: experience working with elder abuse & neglect cases.

Black Hills Advocate helps a variety of people including people who are aging, people who are caregivers for a loved one or families with aging parents who live in the Black Hills. Black Hills Advocate also assists people who are facing illness; either short term or long term. They also facilitate a culture of transparency between patient and provider. Black Hills Advocate provide services including accompaniment to doctor/hospital visits, coordination of all health care providers, maintain portfolio of medical history, communicate with client's accountants, attorneys & financial planners, process monthly bill paying & bank statement reconciliation, implement financial planning strategies, assist with completion of health insurance & financial assistance applications, research treatment options, assist with advance directives (Health Care or Financial POA, Living Will, etc.), perform wellness visits at home or extended care facilities, coordinate end-of-life requests & after care planning, provide Guardianship & Conservatorship, advocate for patient's rights & medical needs, and assist with level of care choices & placement.

Strives to advocate for the rights of people who have disabilities in the community. Throughout the year, specific events are held to bring awareness and information to Brookings citizens. Technical assistance is provided to the business community, private individuals, governmental entities and nonprofit organizations. This is a service not provided by any other entity in Brookings. The goals of this service are to improve the quality of life for people who have disabilities through enhancing the knowledge base of entities in the community and to further serve as a community-based advocacy group enhancing the ability of local entities to comply with federal civil rights legislation.

Providing the following services: - ADVOCACY Teaching people with disabilities the skills needed to advocate for themselves. - INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS Providing hands-on training in daily-living skills (cooking, budgeting, organizing and more). - INFORMATION AND REFERRAL Connecting people with resources which can provide needed information to assist individuals to live independently. - PEER COUNSELING Providing opportunities for people with disabilities to engage with others in small or large groups or on an individual basis. - TRANSITION Facilitating the transition of individuals with disabilities from a nursing home to independent living; providing prevention services to individuals who choose to live independently and not in a nursing home or assisted-living setting; and assisting youth to gain skills as they transition into adulthood. - COMMUNITY LIVING SERVICES Assisting individuals in obtaining accessible, affordable housing, transportation, and other community living services. - HOME MODIFICATION ADAPTIVE DEVICES Providing home modifications and adaptive devices, which could include ramps, lift chairs, bathroom modifications, reachers, canes, walkers and more. - TELECOMMUNICATION ADAPTIVE DEVICES Providing adapted telecommunication services, which includes an emergency phone dialer. - AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT Serving as educators and consultants for contractors, businesses, organizations, and individuals regarding the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its guidelines and requirements. - ASSISTIVE DAILY LIVING SERVICES Providing services for people ages 18 and older, with physical disabilities affecting all four limbs, who need assistance with daily living activities. Services include program education and support and personal attendant services. - MONEY FOLLOWS THE PERSON - Providing options for older adults and/or people with disabilities living in nursing homes, hospitals, or long-term care facilities to enable them to successfully return to their homes and communities. Helps individuals identify barriers to living on their own, helps them find a place to live that meets their needs, and helps them find the services and supports they need to continue living independently.

Enforcement powers include orders to hire, reinstate, promote, awards of back pay, damages and cease and desist orders. - Civil Rights Promotion (Legally Mandated): Administers and enforces the Civil Rights Laws under the Code of Ordinances of Sioux Falls Chapter 98. Americans with Disabilities Act: Provides information and guidance on discrimination related issues as protected by the ADA, including requests for reasonable accommodations and modifications. Fair Housing: Protects residents of Sioux Falls from illegal acts of discrimination in all aspects of housing through enforcement of Fair Housing laws under the Code of Ordinances of Sioux Falls Chapter 98. Provides education and awareness of fair housing laws and illegal discrimination. Fair Housing seeks to informally resolve disputes where a civil rights violation appears to have occurred. Fair Housing does not provide legal advice. Individuals may file a written discrimination complaint with the Human Relations Office if they believe they have been treated unfairly because of their race, color, creed, sex, national origin, religion, ancestry, familial status, or disability. Provides training, technical assistance, education, research, and services to promote best practices and build statewide and local community capacity. Disability Rights South Dakota assists persons of all ages with issues relating to disabilities: Information and referral Abuse, neglect and rights violations based on disability Discrimination based on disability Employment Social Security/SSI/SSDI and how to incorporate benefits into your ability to work Voting Persons with disabilities, parents, guardians, attorneys, professionals and others concerned about the rights of persons with disabilities are encouraged to contact Disability Rights South Dakota. Corporate office is in Pierre and field offices are in Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Call ahead for Sioux Falls and Rapid City as there may or may not be staff in-office.
