Community Friendship Gardens Garden plots are available for a $33.00 fee, please call for an application and information. Garden Guidelines and Rules: All plots and surrounding areas must be kept free of weeds, trash, and litter. Plots need to be cleaned up by October 15 of each year so that tilling can be done for the following year. Don't forget to harvest all of your crops. Any fencing must be removed at the end of the season before the City does their tilling. Forestry Tree branches are to be trimmed and cut to a minimum height of thirteen and one-half (13½) feet above the street or alley level to allow ample space for the movement of city maintenance and garbage disposal equipment. All existing hedges and shrubs on the boulevard or parking strips shall be trimmed to a height of thirty inches as measured from the gutter level of the street. Trees shall be planted at a distance (30 feet) apart as determined by the Parks and Recreation Board considering the ultimate size of the variety of tree involved. Please call for a free planting permit and staking the location for boulevard trees. A free tree removal permit is issued by this office if you wish to remove trees or stumps that are located on the boulevard or in an alley area.

This department oversees Kuhnert Arboretum, Community Gardens, boulevard trees, park trees, landscape ordinance, municipal trees, and tree insect and disease control.

Establish and maintain a safe and sustainable tree resource in the park system and oversee various City ordinances that apply to trees. Property owners are responsible for the care and maintenance of street trees located in the boulevard abutting their property; this includes keeping them properly trimmed. Manages the City of Mitchell Urban Forest, and provides and maintains sports fields and facilities, and also provides recreational programming for all ages and abilities. The Parks and Recreation department manages the Mitchell Recreation Center and Indoor Aquatic Center, that provides fitness and recreational opportunities to the public as well as the outdoor aquatic center. The Parks and Recreation department also manages Lakeview Municipal Golf Course, an 18-hole municipal facility.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Management for Aberdeen. EAB has not been found in Aberdeen but the City is currently surveying and monitoring for this insect. Treatment of Ash trees is not recommended at this time. If a tree is suspected to be infested with EAB, please contact the City Forestry Division.

Recreation Opportunities - provides a wide range of youth and adult public recreational activities. City recreation exists to provide opportunities for leisure time activities at an affordable cost, usually subsidized by public funds, which are not feasible or easily provided by the private sector. Forestry - purpose is to preserve and perpetuate one of the community's most valuable natural resource and asset - its municipal forest of trees on public property, including boulevards, parks and other city properties. The City of Brookings is responsible for the planting, care and maintenance and removal / replacement of trees on public property, including city boulevards, parks and schools. Parks Department - builds and maintains the parks in the Brookings Park system, comprising over 640 acres. The department also cooperates closely with the Brookings School District in building and maintaining joint school / park facilities. A full-time staff, assisted by seasonal employees, provides all maintenance and plays a significant role in developing and constructing new parks.
