Purpose is to study and record the history and development of Minnehaha County. The society works to mark and preserve historical buildings and sites across the county. Through its monthly meetings (September - May), the society educates its members and the public on the rich heritage of the people and land of Minnehaha County.
The Pettigrew Home and Museum is a historic house built in 1889 and in 1911 became the home of Richard Franklin Pettigrew. He was the first Senator for the State of South Dakota. There are two museum galleries featuring exhibits on Pettigrew and historic Sioux Falls. Tours of the home are offered every day of the week.
The Adams House, built in 1892, is an elegant Victorian-era home with original contents that chronicles Deadwood's transition from a lawless mining camp to a prosperous and technologically rich metropolitan city.

The Commission provides information regarding the history of the Pierre-Ft. Pierre area through booklets and brochures, website, and through sponsorship of presentations about the history of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
In 1960, The Dakotaland Museum started as The Pioneer Museum a tribute to all of the early settlers. Located in the 1913 Dairy Exhibit Building on the State Fairgrounds, The Dakotaland Museum celebrates the spirit and history of Beadle County.
The South Dakota State Historical Society operates five program areas - archaeology, archives, historic preservation, museum, and research and publishing. Explore South Dakota's history, list your home on the National Register of Historic Places, read the South Dakota State Historical Society publications, study in the research room, and visit the museum.

The Old Courthouse Museum was Minnehaha County's first courthouse, built in 1889 with a 165 foot clock tower. The museum features three floors of history related exhibits, along with a variety of educational programming including historic walking tours, kids activities including summer camps, concerts, and much more.
