Hospice care can be set up at home, in long-term care facilities or assisted living, or hospice centers. Hospice professionals are specially trained to manage pain and symptoms with palliative medicine at the end of life so patients are comfortable, yet alert and able to enjoy each day to the fullest extent possible. The Dougherty Hospice House provides care 24/7 and is available for patients who cannot live at home anymore, there is a room and board fee for those who are on a residential level of care. The inpatient unit is also for hospice patients needing acute hospital care.

The goal is to enhance the quality of life by focusing on the physical, emotional and spiritual comfort for the terminally ill. Ava's House features 16 adult patient rooms and 4 pediatric patient rooms.
Monument Health Spearfish Hospital offers extensive patient services centralized at one location which includes both the hospital and Spearfish Monument Medical Clinic. Hospice services use a team approach of physicians, nurses, social workers, home health aides, volunteers, chaplains, family members and others. Hospice strives to provide quality medical care, pain and symptom management, and emotional and spiritual support tailored to help ensure a higher quality of life. Nursing visits are made on a regular schedule and an on-call 24-hour basis as needed. In addition to quality care, hospice provides, at no additional cost, medications related to your illness, durable medical equipment, such as walkers and wheelchairs, and bereavement counseling. Patients in a nursing home or assisted living center, may be eligible to take advantage of these hospice services, thus reducing out-of-pocket costs for medication and equipment.

Hospice House provides three levels of care: - Acute Care: 24/7 skilled nursing care for patients who are rapidly declining or where the medical condition requires skilled care. - Respite Care: A five-day stay is available under Medicare, Medicaid, and some insurance to allow family members a respite for caregiving. - Residential Care: If hospice care at home isn't possible, Hospice House provides residential care. Most insurance covers the hospice care at Hospice House. Patients are responsible for a $300 daily room and board cost.
