Mentoring Program | Big Friend Little Friend of the Mitchell Area

A one-to-one mentoring program that supports Mitchell area families by providing youth with a caring adult who helps them navigate life. Volunteer mentors are matched with a mentee based on similar interests and personalities. BFLF has four different mentoring programs: - Community-Based Mentoring: The volunteer mentor and their mentee meet in the evenings or weekends. Mentoring occurs for at least one hour per week for one year. - School-Based Mentoring: The volunteer mentor and child meet at the child's elementary school during the school day for mentoring. Mentoring occurs for at least one hour per week for one school year. - South Dakota Youth Hunting Adventures: The volunteer mentor and youth complete outdoor activities together, which may include: hunting, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and hiking. Mentoring duration and commitment for this program varies by individual match. - Mentor Mom: The Young Mom and Mentor Mom meet for mentoring at least one hour each week for a year.

Children who want to be matched with a mentor need to fill out an application and do an interview with their parent or guardian. People who want to be mentors also need to fill out an application and have an in-person interview. The application can be found on the website.
